Easter Bunny Buns

Easter bunny buns

It just makes sense to turn ordinary things into Easter shapes this time of year, so I decided to pick something relatively easy since I have writing deadlines to meet. These cute little bunny buns were whipped up in about 30 minutes, including baking time and my kids thought they were awesome!

Here`s the recipe, then I’ll give step by step photo instructions on how to make the bunnies.

Quick Yeast Bread

Makes 12 bunny buns

1 1/4 c. warm water
3 Tblsp. sugar
1 tsp. salt
1/4 c. oil
3-4 c. flour (start with 3, add more if dough is sticky)
2 1/2 Tblsp. yeast

Mix sugar, water and yeast in a bowl and leave for 10 minutes to foam up.

After 10 minutes, stir in oil and salt. Add flour gradually, mixing until it`s fully incorporated. Dump onto a floured surface and knead for 5 min. Shape buns as shown below and put directly (no need for rising) into a 350º oven for 15-20 min. or until golden brown.

step one
First, roll out a ball of dough about 1.5 inches across. Use half the amount of dough and roll a snake that is 3″ long and pinch it in half.

Step two
Now stick the smaller pieces of dough to the ball “head”.

step three
I pinched some of my ears to make them pointier, but they look fine rounded, too.

Step four
Repeat with the other ear.

Step five
Add a small ball of dough for a nose. Warning: My children complained bitterly about the fact that these bunnies had no eyes or mouths, so if your kids are sticklers for details, just add those . . . three smaller balls of dough. Trust me, it will be worth the effort!

baked
And after baking! I`d love to see what you come up with, so if you make this recipe, drop me a link to your photos on Flickr or your blog!

Ha! My problem, too. Luckily I have two little boys who happily scarf down most of the batch while I'm still cooking it.
